Disaster SimulationIn the event of a disaster or a catastrophe many people look toward organizations to take care of the problem. It is important that this help comes in an organized and efficient way. To do this there have to be ways of training for it. Be it a flood, Earth quake, hurricane or even an airplane flying into a building in New York City, if rescue workers have no idea how to handle the situation, more lives than need to be are lost. There are now simulation centers that have been built to prepare those in the business of helping others. FEMA has recently opened one for disaster simulation in order to be better prepared for the next devastating event that drops onto the country. This and other centers work on the same concept as when soldiers run training missions. They have to go into the field with the equipment issued them and learn how to clear a field, take a bunker, maintain contact with the entire troop and more so when they are flown into a place like Afghanistan they know how to act and what to do to keep themselves and their team alive. The same goes for other kinds of actions. Medical personnel have to know where to set up a base of operations for the mass of incoming wounded. There needs to be a place preplanned to take the bodies of the dead rather than have them lining the street for children to see and animals to ravage. There need to be certain crews who know where to meet up when something happens. Creating simulations of these crises is the best way to train for the eventuality of bad things happening. As in New York when 9/11 happened there was a great deal of drawing together in order to best serve and attempt to save lives during the most tragic event in American history. They had no formal training because it was never thought it would happen here. Now that it has become clear that people in this country are ill prepared to handle situations like this it is time to keep the disorganization from ever happening again as in New Orleans during and after Katrina hit. Volunteers for disaster relief are always welcome in times of great need. They can find places like the fire department and police stations to have their name added to the list of volunteer teams that will be called in when a major catastrophe happens in their area or out of the state. Being prepared is the best way to save lives. It is not going to happen unless people stand up and make it a point to add their lives to the list of names to help in this endeavor. Being a volunteer will give you great pride and also help others. Becoming part of the solution is the best place to be in the world today. |
